A Socio-medical Survey on Micro-Bus Drivers in Seoul


Abstract
A socio-medical survey conducted by the author from 13. August to 15 November, 1964 was made among 667 micro-bus drivers in Seoul City. Distribution by age, place of birth, number of family members. monthly ncome, educational career, working hour, sleeping hour, -utilization *of spare time,~preferance for drinking, morbid status utilization of medical facilities, knowledge on health, and physicalexamination are the main items coveed by this survey, which lead to the following conclusions:
1. Age group from 25 to 34 makes up 67.4% of the total drivers.

2. Regarding place of birth Seoul ranks highest with 30.2%, Kyonggido 19.4% and Chung Chong namdo 12.6% which shows it is centered relatively around Seoul City.

3. Out of total drivers 8 % are shown to believe to religion, which consists largely of christianity and Buddhism

4. Family of 3 to 6 members makes up 70.7% of the total.

5. Monthly income ranges from 5, 000 to 9, 000 won and the average is 6, 267 won.
6. Among the total drivers 99% have recieved education. Primary school experienced are 35.9%,, middle school 23.2%, high school 18.5%, and college graduation 0.3%.

7. Working hour ranges from 6 to 13 hours and the average is 9.71 hours.
8. Sleeping hour ranges from 3 to 12 hour and the average is 7.49 hours.

9. In utilization of spare time 39.8% of drivers, spend their spare time of home affairs 34.8% rest, and 12.1 % entertainment.

0. It is observed that 55.6% of the total drivers drinks.

11. Out of the total 26.5 % are sick and alimentary disorder ranks highest.

12. In average each driver has 0.82 day of absence, in July, this means per every 100 drivers there are 2.2 persons of absence daily.

13. Out of the total 90.8% utilize medical facilities, among them 59.2% i - hospital and 24.3 % drug store.
14. Half of the total accidents occur during night. time, 35.9 % in P.M. and 14.1 % jin PA.M. by season, ,++38.5 %

occur in spring, 35.5% in winter, 23% in summer and 3% in autumn. In the7 cases of accidents, sufferer¢¥
carelessness are 37% that of drivers 63%.

15. Out of the total 83.5% have knowledge on health and 57.7% are ,taught health education.

16. _Those who had physical examination at their entrance test occupy 55.0% and have had regular interval physical examination are_75.9%.
